Tim Scott, GOP’s lone Black senator, ties his personal story to Trump’s re-election

Tim Scott, one of the most prominent Black Republicans in America, gave a stirring speech on Monday tying his personal journey from college dropout and son of a single working mother to lawmakers to Trump’s vision for the country’s future.

“Do we want a society that breeds success, or a culture that cancels everything it even slightly disagrees with?” Scott in his speech — which was notably different than other speakers on the main stage in that Trump was not the main focus — touted his legislative relationship with the president on the economy and education.

He painted Biden and Harris as the leaders of “radical Democrats” who want to turn American into a “socialist utopia.”

His speech was also designed as a pitch to Black voters, who almost universally support Biden and the Democratic ticket. Scott, who is the first Black

And while Kennedy and Markey have themselves agreed that vitriolic attacks have no place even in an increasingly contentious inordinately online race, the Massachusetts congressman’s campaign wants the incumbent senator to do more about it.

In an email Monday morning to Markey campaign manager John Walsh, Kennedy campaign manager Nick Clemons called for “a personal and public statement from Senator Markey himself instructing his followers to immediately end the attacks on Joe’s supporters, the threats to Joe and his family’s life, and the destruction of Kennedy for Massachusetts campaign materials and property.”

“At the end of the day, the buck stops with the

The South Carolina senator, giving the capstone address of the evening, portrayed himself as the product of “the promise of the American journey,” a up-by-the-bootstraps story of upward mobility that brought the grandson of a cotton picker to the U.S. Capitol — and warned that Democratic rule could undermine such a trajectory.

“While this election is between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, it is not solely about Donald Trump and Joe Biden,” Scott said. “It’s about the promise of America. It’s about you and me — our challenges

The BBC has criticised social media attacks made against this year’s Last Night of the Proms conductor amid the Rule Britannia! controversy.

The Sunday Times reported that organisers feared a backlash if the anthem was played, along with Land of Hope and Glory, because of a perceived association with slavery and colonialism.

It drew anger from supporters of the music, and it has since been confirmed the pieces will be played but without singing.

Some Twitter users criticised this year’s conductor, Dalia Stasevska, from Finland, but the BBC has moved to defend her.

Evangelical leader Falwell’s fate in limbo after new reports of personal scandals

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Jerry Falwell Jr, whose endorsement helped power Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency, agreed to immediately resign as head of the Christian university he runs but then withdrew his resignation following media reports about it, the school said in a statement.

The statement late on Monday from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, where Falwell has served as president for over a decade, capped a day of back-and-forth news accounts surrounding an alleged sex scandal involving a business partner and Falwell’s wife.

Hours earlier, Politico quoted Falwell as saying, “I have not resigned,” in response to reports in the Washington Post and other media that he had stepped down.

ABC News and the Wall Street Journal each reported separately that Falwell had told them on Monday night that he had submitted his resignation to the university’s board of directors.

The sequence of events came a little over two

Republicans Get Personal About Trump to Counter Attacks on His Character | America 2020

As Republicans repeatedly warned of a socialist takeover and a “radical left” agenda looking to transform the county, some of President Donald Trump’s closest allies spent the first night of the GOP’s nominating convention seeking to paint a more personal portrait of the president.

Since running for president in 2016, Trump has typically opted for large campaign rallies and gatherings instead of more intimate events to meet and socialize with voters and supporters. But with the coronavirus pandemic largely halting in-person campaigning, the nearly all-virtual Republican convention gave those who know him best a chance to show a more personal side of a president who has been urged by some in the party to soften his tone amid sinking poll numbers.

Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, one of the president’s fiercest allies in Congress, usually gives fiery speeches defending the president and decrying Democratic policies, most notably during the impeachment
