A few months ago, we went to Hawaii for Cowboy’s work (Little Roper and I tagged along). It was a ton of fun and we set out on different adventures every morning. There is a fun swap meet, or flea market, that goes around the entire football stadium but it’s only open on certain days. We went through it on one of the days and were able to get a whole bunch of souvenirs at a fraction of what some of the other stores were charging. One of my favorites was my purse. It’s kind of like a hobo bag but it has 3 different sections from how the fabrics criss-cross over each other. I figured I could make something like that so I went to it.
First of all I cut out two pieces with the handle going one way and then two pieces with the handle going the other way, like the picture below. It kind of swoops down to allow for the criss cross to work. I made sure to fold and press the edges to make it easier to sew. The only ones I did that to were the ones on the curve and down to the smaller edges. I sewed each of the four pieces and then attached a piece of velcro on only 2 of the sides (these will go in the middle). Now to attach everything together, you’ll want to put the two pieces you sewed the velcro onto in the outside, sandwiching the other two pieces. Starting with the handles, sew all the way around the purse.
I don’t own a serger so I made sure to do a zigzag stitch as close to the edge as possible to keep it a little neater. Then I took some fray solution and applied it to all of the edges, helping keep the little pieces from fraying and making a mess.
The purse I bought in Hawaii has a little bit of a bottom so I wanted to do the same for this one. Taking that seam, I pulled the pieces out so that they laid flat. Then I sewed a straight line making a small triangle (where the pink arrow is pointing). Do the same thing on the other side of the bag and then you can trim them a little bit.
And there you go! Flip it inside out and enjoy your fun new purse. My favorite part is that there are the different sections so not everything I put in it will get completely lost. You can keep more things in the middle as well since it will velcro shut! It’s the perfect bag when you don’t need to carry a lot of stuff!
What would you use this purse for?
